The President’s Greetings for the Holidays and the New Year

Dear members,

This has been a very interesting and thrilling year, where the Association has taken a leap forward into the Law of the Internet and earning a stronger presence in the UN. For the next year we will bring many new activities and our biannual congress. For those who would like to learn in greater detail about the footsteps taken along this very successful year, please check out the document attached below.

The path that the Association took with the Barcelona Conference will continue throughout years to come, and we hope for all of those that didn’t join this recent events, to see you in the future ones.

The Board of Governors Selected Sorell Negro as New National President for the United States Chapter

The Board of Governors has decided to elect Ms. Sorell Negro as the New President of the World Jurist Association U.S. Chapter. We are confident that her excellent legal experience will further enhance the Association as she leads the founding branch of the World Jurist Association. She is the youngest female attorney in our history to be designated as a President of a National Chapter. The Association foresees a promising future with the help of Ms. Negro’s professionalism and determination.

Currently, Ms. Negro is based in Miami, working as a lawyer at Robinson & Cole’s Land Use and Real Estate + Development Groups. She represents large institutional clients, including multinational corporations, non-profit organizations, and local and regional government entities. Her litigation experience encompasses both U.S. state and federal courts, in addition to international matters throughout her various cases over the years. These cases include disputes pertaining conservation and the uses of natural resources, land use in terms of development claims, public health concerns, and product liability claims containing hazardous materials. Additionally, Ms. Negro previously worked in cooperation with international teams of lawyers and advisers to help administer environmental law projects within areas of the Caribbean and Africa. All of these factors demonstrate Ms. Negro’s passion, as we are sure she will utilize her values and experience to further this Association’s mission of ensuring peace through cooperation.

In 2015, Ms. Negro was named finalist for the ABA Young Lawyers Division – National Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. She was also recipient of the 2013 Jefferson B. Fordham Up & Comer Award from the ABA Section of State and Local Government Law. Ms. Negro is the CLE Coordinator for the ABA Section of State and Local Government Law, Chair of the ABA Real Property, Trust and Estate Law’s Land Use and Zoning Committee, and Co-Chair of the Water Resources Committee of the ABA Section of Environment, Energy and Resources.

Before working at Robinson & Cole, Ms. Negro clerked for the Honorable Fernando M. Olguin of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She graduated magna cum laude with a J.D. in Cross-Cultural Issues in Mediation and Negotiation from the Scheinman Institute of Cornell University. She also obtained a B.S. in Justice and Peace from Georgetown University, graduating with the cum laude academic distinction.

WJA for the celebration of the 55th ECOSOC Session Side Event

This last week members of the Board of Governors and the German Chapter met in New York in order to push forward the proposal for the side event on the 55th Session of the Social Development Committee of the ECOSOC, at the UN. to this goal the first Vice President, Kim Quarles, the German President, Alex Löw, and the Executive Vice President, Ramon Soler-Padró Canela, met with the German Mission at the UN in order to explain the program of the side event and get their support, which is currently being revised by the authorities in Berlin. The team also met with Thomas P. Braun, Chief, Architecture and Security at the Office of Information and Communications Technology at the United Nations.

The WJA Germany National President, Dr. Alexander Löw, Gives a Conference at the German Board of Directors Association’s Annual Meeting

Dr. Alexander Löw held a speech on “The Board of Directors and the implications with cyber warriors, a live hacking presentation”, attending with the WJA Spanish National President Dr. Jacinto Soler Padró, at  the German Board Conference that was organized by the German Corporate Governance Institute and the Union of Board of Directors in Germany, to introduce the workflow of hacks, the impacts, toolsets and real vulnerabilities in the internet to the audience. There was also explained the implications and possible solution scenarios to prepare companies and individuals against cyber attacks and which questions should be asked to govern a corporation in the area of cybersecurity and cybersafety. This session show the need to educate board members in the area of cyber, explaining and teaching them about all the different terms and procedures in order to design a decision making overview to build a future proof resilient enterprise.

Congress ‘IV Jornadas de Derecho Privado’ at Zulia State Bar Association, Venezuela

Dear friends we are very happy to present the Congress that our Venezuelan national president, Dr. Alberto Jurado Salazar is promoting at the Zulia State Bar Association, in which he will talk about the application of the United Nations’s treaty against corruption in Venezuela.
